Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:

  • Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

Offseason Controversies and Media Attention

This event follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered significant backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that examined his role in developing the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its continuing initiative to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
